Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police, Inc.

Established in 1956, the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police (AACOP) is an organization that represents the leaders of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in Alaska.

AACOP is an influential participant in the State of Alaska’s legislative process. The Association stretches across the state and its membership comprises many well respected law enforcement executives from a variety of federal, state and municipal agencies.  AACOP members are serving and have served in leadership and committee positions in such organizations as the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), and the FBI National Academy Associates.

AACOP’s mission is to promote and advance the interests of law enforcement in the State of Alaska; to develop and disseminate professional administrative best practices, and to promote their use in the law enforcement profession; to foster police cooperation and the exchange of information and experience throughout the state; to enhance recruitment and training of qualified persons in the police profession; and to encourage the adherence of all law enforcement agencies to high professional standards.

AACOP committees offer members the opportunity to work with peers to assess current issues in law enforcement and develop solutions, ideas and projects in response to those issues. The AACOP committees are active in developing and promoting publications, sample policies and guidelines which serve to assist members in their jobs. Also, as contemporary issues are identified, ad hoc committees are established to provide guidance to the Association and its membership.

Active committees of the Association include:

  • Legislative,
  • By-Laws and Policy,
  • Membership,
  • Ways and Means,
  • Finance

The annual Executive Development Conference, co-sponsored by AACOP, the Alaska Police Standards Council and the Alaska chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates, provides the opportunity for senior leaders to:

  • Participate in educational sessions;
  • Listen to keynote speakers on issues related to the administration of law enforcement agencies and the industry; and
  • Interact and network with other law enforcement leaders from throughout the state.
